Community Pride: It Starts on the Streets

May 13, 20253 min read

Every street tells a story, and every neighbourhood reflects the pride of those who call it home. As a resident and Alderman in Hobart, I deeply believe that the appearance, safety, and functionality of our neighbourhoods significantly impact our quality of life and sense of community.

Our homes represent far more than mere shelters; they are symbols of our aspirations, achievements, and legacies. For many, homeownership is the culmination of years of dedication and sacrifice. Particularly when houses and rentals are at sky high values, it is natural and justified for residents and renters alike to expect that their surroundings reflect their pride and investment.

Unfortunately, too often we see beautifully kept homes juxtaposed with scruffy streets, pothole-riddled roads, and poorly maintained grass verges. This neglect not only diminishes the aesthetic value of a community but also directly impacts property values and public morale. Residents deserve neighbourhoods that mirror the care, pride, and attention they put into their own homes. It is the fundamental responsibility of local councils to maintain these standards, ensuring communities remain attractive and inviting.

Beyond aesthetics, neighbourhood pride is closely tied to safety and practical functionality. Roads marred by potholes and inadequate maintenance aren't merely eyesores—they pose genuine risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Poor road conditions can lead to accidents, causing harm and distress to community members. Additionally, essential safety features like street lighting, visible signage, and well-maintained public spaces are crucial for fostering a secure environment where families feel comfortable and safe, and children can play without fear.

When neighbourhoods are visually appealing, functionally effective, and secure, they naturally foster stronger community connections. Pride in our surroundings encourages active participation from residents in maintaining community standards. Residents become more involved in local initiatives, more supportive of one another, and more willing to collaborate on projects that enhance their neighbourhood. This shared sense of pride creates a resilient community, capable of facing challenges collectively and proactively.

Local government plays a pivotal role in cultivating this community pride. Regular, systematic investment in road repairs, landscaping maintenance, and infrastructure improvements demonstrate a tangible commitment to residents' well-being. Councils must be proactive rather than reactive, responding swiftly to maintenance requests and anticipating infrastructure needs to avoid future deterioration. This level of attention sends a clear message that all residents, irrespective of their location within the community, matter equally.

Moreover, maintaining high standards in neighbourhood upkeep has broader economic and social benefits. Well-kept neighbourhoods attract investment, enhance local commerce, and can even reduce crime rates by promoting active community surveillance and participation. In contrast, neglected areas can spiral into decline, adversely affecting both local businesses and community morale.

I believe that council should be deeply committed to ensuring our neighbourhoods meet these essential standards. I believe that pride in our community should not be a luxury but an inherent right of all residents. Maintaining our streets, parks, and public spaces to a high standard isn't simply about appearances—it’s about respect for residents and recognition of their contributions to our community.

Together, we can create neighbourhoods where every resident can proudly say, “This is my home.” Let's commit to fostering a community where pride, safety, and functionality define our streets, ensuring Hobart remains not only a beautiful place to live but also a model for community excellence and engagement.
